With less than a decade of art experience, Randy Nottingham has grown into one of the regions most award winning and finest western artists. Randy imparts the soul and wit of his subjects, taken from the historic and new west.
Randy has become well known for his fine impressionistic brushwork, while not sacrificing careful attention to drawing, value, edges, and oil color.
Randy’s awards include Judges' Choice at the 2006 Wyoming Cares Art Show. He won Best of Oil at the 2006 Western Spirit Art Show. He won Purchase Award (2006), Best of Oil (2005), and Grand Prize (2004) at the Rough Rider International Art Show. Randy won Judges' Choice (2006), Best of Show and Judges' Choice (2005) and Best of Oil (2004) at the Platte Valley Art Festival. He won Artist's Choice at the 2005 Stampede Western Invitational Art Show. Randy won a Purchase Award and Best of Show (2006), and Best of the Wild Horse (2003) at the Wyoming Governor's Wild Horse Art Show. Randy also has won purchase awards in art competitions at private clubs and museums.
Randy is a self-taught artist, but has also studied under Morgan Weistling and Carolyn Anderson.
Medium: Painting
I paint on linen using commercially made oil paint. More archival than cotton, linen paintings are with us from the 15th century.
For large works, I stretch the linen onto commercial stretcher bars. For smaller works, I purchase linen panels. I then typically free-hand a sketch using thinned paint. Next using natural-hair brushes, the painting is done in a few settings, mostly while the paint is wet.
Please feel free to inquire about any paintings on display, or about the process that I use in their creation. All work shown is of my original creation using professional models and my own photography as reference. I work on location and at my studio, without the help of apprentices or assistants.
I am a fairly prolific artist, painting about 50 paintings per year. I sell my work at indoor and outdoor fine art shows throughout the west.
